Understand CAT before quoting only by photo
CAT holders are part of the V-flange steep taper family and are commonly associated with ANSI/ASME B5.50 style tooling. They may look close to BT holders in a catalog photo, but they are not the same standard. The flange, pull stud style and machine retention system must match the spindle. Buyers should avoid treating CAT, BT and older NMTB holders as interchangeable just because the taper looks similar.
A CAT holder normally works with a retention knob or pull stud that draws the holder into the spindle. The drive flange, dog notch area, thread and pull stud geometry all matter for correct machine engagement. For a safe quotation, send the machine brand, spindle taper, old holder photo, old pull stud photo or existing model marking when possible. These small details save time and reduce the risk of receiving a holder that fits the taper but not the machine.
Choose CAT40 or CAT50 by machine and cutting load
CAT40 is common on medium machining centers and general milling work. It is often requested for ER collet chucks, end mill holders, drill chuck holders and face mill holders used in regular production. CAT50 is larger and is usually requested for heavier cutting, larger face mills, longer projection tools or machines that need more rigidity. A buyer should not move from CAT40 to CAT50 only because the tool looks heavier. The machine spindle decides the taper first.
The holder style should be chosen by the cutting tool and process. CAT ER collet chucks are flexible for different shank sizes. End mill holders use a side lock screw for Weldon shanks and heavier milling. Shell mill or face mill holders need the correct pilot diameter and drive key. Drill chuck holders must match the chuck capacity and drilling range. Shrink, hydraulic or high precision holders may be requested when the buyer needs tighter runout or higher speed, but those belong to a different price level than general resale holders.
Retention knobs are part of the CAT holder order
CAT pull studs are not generic bolts. The thread, head angle, shoulder length, gripper contact area and coolant structure can vary by machine requirement. A wrong retention knob can create poor clamping, vibration, spindle wear or a dangerous tool release problem. This is why experienced suppliers ask buyers to verify the pull stud from the machine manual, old installed part, machine builder information or a trusted existing order record.
For export orders, we recommend quoting CAT holders and pull studs together when the buyer is not certain about the existing stock. It is better to confirm the pull stud at the RFQ stage than to discover the mismatch when the tools are already in the buyer's warehouse. ZSCNC can help organize CAT holders, CAT retention knobs, ER collets, ER nuts and spanners as one matched purchasing list.
Balance, coolant and gauge length should be written clearly
Many CAT RFQs only list CAT40 ER32 or CAT40 end mill holder, but that may not be enough. High speed machining may need a balance grade and target rpm. Coolant-through machining may need coolant holes, coolant-through pull studs or specific holder structure. Long gauge length holders may solve fixture clearance problems, but they can also reduce rigidity and increase vibration risk if the cutting load is heavy.
When the buyer gives the application, ZSCNC can quote the proper level. A general resale holder, a precision holder, a balanced holder and a high speed holder should not be mixed as if they were the same product. If price is the main concern, we can suggest practical common models. If quality or speed is the main concern, the RFQ should state runout, balance, rpm and inspection expectations clearly.
Quality checks that matter for CAT export orders
For CAT holders, ZSCNC can check taper surface, flange condition, thread direction, pull stud fit direction, visible finish, model marking, blackening or coating, protective caps, rust prevention and carton separation before shipment. For ER collet chuck orders, we can also help match ER collets, ER nuts and spanners so the buyer receives a usable package instead of only a holder body.
For distributors, carton labels and model separation are important because CAT40 and CAT50 accessories are easy to mix in a large order. For workshop buyers, we focus on the practical points that affect installation: taper standard, holder type, gauge length, pull stud compatibility and whether coolant-through is needed. For repeat orders, keeping a clear model list gives better quality control than relying on memory or screenshots.
Price, delivery and OEM packing advantage
CAT holders are often purchased with pull studs, ER collets, ER nuts, spanners, drill chuck holders and tool carts. ZSCNC can quote these together, which helps buyers reduce scattered sourcing cost, repeated shipping cost and small accessory mismatch. This is useful for importers and distributors who do not want to chase one supplier for holders, another for pull studs and another for collets.
For repeat distributors, we can keep common CAT40 and CAT50 model lists, buyer labels and carton marks. This makes future orders faster and reduces the chance of mixing pull stud standards, holder lengths or carton labels. Our price advantage comes from combined sourcing. Our delivery advantage comes from keeping repeat models organized. Our quality advantage comes from checking model, quantity, visible finish, matching accessories and packing before shipment.

RFQ checklist
For a faster quotation, send these details when possible:
- CAT40 or CAT50 spindle taper
- Holder style, such as ER, end mill, face mill, shell mill or drill chuck holder
- Gauge length or projection length
- Collet size, tool shank size, pilot diameter or cutter size
- Pull stud standard, thread, head angle or old pull stud photo

Why buyers use ZSCNC
ZSCNC is useful for overseas buyers who want practical sourcing support, not only a product photo. We can help confirm common CAT40 and CAT50 model direction, compare total purchasing cost, prepare quick quotations for mixed orders, check visible quality points before shipment and arrange neutral or OEM packing. For buyers who sell to machine shops, the value is not only a cheaper holder. It is receiving the correct holder, pull stud and accessory list with fewer corrections.
Our price advantage comes from organizing common CNC tooling accessories in one supply chain. Our delivery advantage comes from familiar model groups, repeat-order records and stock-friendly sourcing. Our quality advantage comes from checking model, quantity, visible finish, matching accessories and packing before shipment. Send the model list once, and we can help turn it into a cleaner export order.
FAQ
Are CAT and BT tool holders interchangeable?
No. CAT and BT holders are both steep taper systems, but the flange, pull stud and retention details are different. Buyers should confirm the spindle standard, machine manual or old holder before ordering.
What information is needed for a CAT40 tool holder RFQ?
Send CAT40 or CAT50, holder type, gauge length, tool shank or cutter size, pull stud standard, coolant requirement, balance or rpm request, runout request, quantity and packing request.
Should pull studs be ordered together?
Yes, if the buyer is not completely sure the existing pull studs match the holder and machine standard. A wrong pull stud can cause clamping, vibration, spindle wear or tool release risk.
When does a CAT holder need balancing?
Balancing should be discussed for high speed machining, longer gauge lengths, heavier tools or buyers who specify a balance grade and target rpm. General resale holders and high speed balanced holders should not be quoted as the same product.
Can ZSCNC provide OEM packing for CAT holders?
Yes. Neutral boxes, buyer labels, barcode labels and carton marks can be prepared for repeat export orders.
