Choose by setup method, not only by photo
Edge finders are small tools, but buyers still need to match them to the way the shop sets up work. A manual milling shop may prefer a simple mechanical edge finder because it is low cost, easy to understand and easy to keep in a toolbox. A CNC workshop or training center may prefer electronic, sound or lamp indication because the contact signal is easier for different operators to see.
A mechanical edge finder rotates in the spindle. As the tip touches the workpiece edge, the contact end lines up briefly and then kicks away. The operator then compensates by half of the tip diameter to set the true edge. This is why the tip diameter matters. A buyer using a 0.200 inch tip will normally compensate by 0.100 inch, while metric buyers may work around 10 mm or 20 mm styles depending on the tool.
Electronic edge finders give a light, sound or visual signal when contact is made. They are convenient for faster confirmation, but the buyer should tell us whether the workpiece is conductive, whether batteries are acceptable, and whether the tool will be used on a manual mill, CNC mill or lathe setup.

An edge finder is a setup aid, not a magic guarantee. Repeatability depends on the tool, the spindle, collet holding, workpiece clamping, surface cleanliness, approach speed and operator method. A dirty workpiece edge, worn collet or loose vise can make even a good edge finder give poor results.
For mechanical types, the operator should approach slowly and watch the kick point. For electronic types, the battery, contact response and workpiece surface condition should be checked before use. For distributors, it is better to describe these tools honestly than to promise unrealistic accuracy from a low-cost accessory.
