Start with the setup job
A mechanical edge finder is commonly used in a rotating spindle. As the tip touches the workpiece edge, the end runs true for a moment and then kicks away. The operator compensates by half of the tip diameter to locate the actual edge. That is why shank size and tip diameter are not small details.
An electronic edge finder works differently. Depending on the design, it can signal contact with light, sound or a visual indicator. It is convenient for faster confirmation, but the buyer should confirm whether the workpiece is conductive, whether batteries are acceptable and whether the tool is intended for manual milling, CNC setup, training or maintenance use.
A center finder is used for locating center lines, holes, bosses, tube centers or scribed reference points. A Z axis zero setter is normally used for tool height or tool length setup. Accuracy depends on the tool and the setup
Setup tools can improve repeatability, but they do not fix every machine condition. Spindle runout, collet condition, vise clamping, dirty edges, burrs, operator approach speed and workpiece material all affect the result. A responsible supplier should explain these limits instead of promising unrealistic accuracy from a low-cost accessory.
For distributors, honest descriptions reduce after-sales trouble. A mechanical edge finder needs correct spindle rotation and a careful approach. An electronic edge finder needs suitable contact conditions and a working battery. A center finder needs the right reference method.
